A Permanent, Safe Option for Uncomplicated UTI Care in NSW

As of 1 June 2024, NSW pharmacists who have completed the mandated training and practice in pharmacies with suitable consultation facilities can provide treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)—for eligible women—without requiring a doctor's prescription. This permanent change stems from a successful statewide trial, where over 1,000 pharmacies (including Fresh Therapeutics Compounding Pharmacy) delivered care to more than 16,000 women.

Who Can Be Treated? Eligibility Criteria

Women who are eligible must:

• Be aged between 18 and 65 years, inclusive

• Exhibit symptoms consistent with an uncomplicated UTI, such as urinary urgency, frequency, or discomfort

• Not have a history of recurrent or complicated UTIs or be at high risk of complications 

Pharmacists conduct an in-person assessment and refer patients to a GP if eligibility criteria are not met 

Qualified Pharmacists, Private Consultations

To provide this service, pharmacists must:

• Hold current general registration and complete the required UTI-specific training via accredited providers such as the Australasian College of Pharmacy or the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia 

• Operate within a designated consultation area in the pharmacy

• Ensure in-person consultations only, with the patient physically present
