Pharmacy-Based Contraceptive Resupply now a reality in NSW
In a major advancement for community healthcare, the NSW Pharmacy Trial - now established as an ongoing service - enables trained pharmacists to resupply oral contraceptive pills (commonly known as 'the pill') to eligible women without requiring a new prescription from a doctor.
Eligible women can now visit participating pharmacies to receive a resupply of their previously prescribed oral contraceptive, provided the request meets the clinical and regulatory guidelines set by NSW Health.
Pharmacists can provide:
Combined oral contraceptive pills (COCs)
Progestogen-only pills (POPs or 'mini-pills')
However, pharmacists cannot change the type of pill or switch to a different formulation. They are only authorised to supply the exact same pill originally prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner, ensuring continuity of care and treatment adherence.
If you're unsure whether your current pill qualifies for pharmacist resupply, our team at Fresh Therapeutics Compounding Pharmacy can help. We will review the brand and formulation you've been prescribed and confirm your eligibility under the service.
Rest assured, pharmacists follow clear clinical protocols and are trained to support safe, evidence-based contraceptive care while respecting patient privacy and health needs.
The contraceptive resupply service includes:
In-person consultation with a trained pharmacist
Verification of prior prescription
Clear advice on continued use and safety monitoring
Referral back to a GP when a change in therapy or further review is needed
To ensure continuity of care, pharmacists are encouraged to communicate with your GP (with your consent), especially if any concerns or follow-ups arise.
While the contraceptive resupply program is a key focus, this service is part of a wider NSW initiative to make healthcare more accessible at the community level. It complements other pharmacist-led services—such as treatments for uncomplicated urinary tract infections—giving patients more options to manage their health without unnecessary delays.
These pharmacy-based services reflect the evolving role of pharmacists as accessible frontline healthcare professionals, delivering safe, convenient care supported by NSW Health, professional training, and ongoing quality assurance.
This program marks a shift toward more patient-centred, flexible healthcare—especially for women managing long-term contraceptive needs.
By removing the barrier of routine prescription renewals, the service:
Reduces waiting times for ongoing access to medication
Improves access for women in rural, regional, or busy urban areas
Strengthens collaboration between pharmacists and doctors
Supports better medication adherence and health outcomes
At Fresh Therapeutics Compounding Pharmacy, we are proud to be part of this important healthcare evolution.
If you’re due for a contraceptive pill resupply and want to know if you’re eligible, our trained pharmacists are here to help. We’ll ensure your treatment continues safely and comfortably—and always with professional care.
